Comparison of the Paths
Preface: The Humanoid Path is discussed in less detail, as it is the “normal” existence of most Terrisians and thus requires little explanation. However, when necessary we offer comparisons of both paths, so that members may make a fully informed decision. The increased detail given to the demonic path is for purposes of clarification only, and is not an indication of my personal preference for one path over another.
Lakash’s Explanation on Demons
The flap of great wings is heard echoing throughout the chambers of the Underworld. A mighty form flies down to land at your feet, sending debris sailing through the air. The being’s black eyes stare unerringly at you. A low growl escapes its immense throat as it speaks.
“Hail, underling in our great army. I be Lakash, Demon Overseer. Has been said ye know not how we denizens of Hell do appear to humanoid eyes… let me tell ye of a few noteworthy… individuals… in our ranks.”
Lakash closes his deep, black eyes for a moment to collect his thoughts, then continues.
“There be Dratch, a lesser demon, who be around 4 feet in height. His wings are just forming, and are useless as of now. He comes from the fiery parts of the Underworld, and his skin tone reflects the deep red of the flames. Though I do be seeing some of the blue, orange, and others. His body is nay massive, yet slight, flexible, and agile. All lesser demons do be of about this body type… skin tone can vary from area to area, climate to climate.”
“There be also Rakarn. He be a Demon Soldier, standing some 6 feet tall. He be built more powerfully than Dratch, yet the wings are still useless. His skin is black, as black as the shadows in which he dwells. He do be a cunning warrior. Hur!” Lakash twitches as he hears the wails of a soul near him. Springing into the air he grasps the soul, proceeding with tormenting the tiny being, and sending a low growl to Kilana and Corin in thanks for the offered gift.
“Now, where did I be…” Lakash quite casually continues. “Ah, yes. Now there be Greater Demons and Demon Lords They do each grow in ways the other two have, and as they do grow their minds become more powerful and cunning, along with their bodies. Wings tend to develop for use at Greater Demon status, and can be used for traveling at great distances by the stature of Demon Lord and Overlord… do excuse me for one moment.” Lakash devours the soul in his hand in one quick movement, and shudders with the new power coursing through his body. A glint appears in his eyes as the chaotic thoughts of death reenter his mind, and he eyes you hungrily. With visible effort he controls his primal desires. Still shuddering, he continues his speech.
“An Overlord named Sartusk be a tall demon, and highly muscular. His mind do be developed fairly well, along with the horns which some demons be sporting. To forestall questions… I have nay seen any 200 foot tall lesser demon, nor do I be seeing any 200 foot tall Demon Overlord. They, the Overlords, do tend to stop around 20 feet… I do be an exception, being of greater stature thanks be to my Master and Mistress. In short, there be many differences… many more than I can go over now.”
Lakash stops speaking, then grins evilly and continues.
“There is one thing we all do have in common… the blood of our foes never be dry on our lips. Muhahaha!”
With his mighty stride, Lakash leaves you to seek out other souls of the Underworld to torment for his Mistress. A low, “hur hur hur…” is heard echoing around you.
Demonic Path vs Humanoid Path: Similarities and Differences
Demons, upon undergoing initiation rites, must first relinquish all control of their souls to Death’s Mistress. While she generally allow demons to retain possession of their souls, this is at her sole discretion. Be forewarned, as this is a terribly painful and risky transformation, and not to be taken lightly. Those of the Humanoid Path retain complete control over their souls, and thus enjoy greater independence.
The primary goal of all templars — and for demons in particular — is to reap, and reap well. My demons are raw, physical, chaotic creatures, kept firmly in check by the power wielded by Catseyes. While many eventually become cunning forces, rarely are demons considered brilliant or especially insightful. I strongly suggest that those who yearn to explore the spiritual or intellectual aspects of Death enter the Humanoid Path. My demons tend to be driven by fury, fear, and a need for power, among other base instincts. Despite this natural inclination, all templars are required to behave in a subservient manner with those above them — of either path. As my temple is of a rigid, militant structure, insubordination will be dealt with harshly. I do not have the time or patience for petty squabbles, or for arrogant templars who experience delusions of grandeur.
Those who select the Demonic Path will start as Lesser Demons: small and not overly bright creatures, however vicious. As my demons rise in rank, reaping stronger creatures in increasing numbers, I allow them to keep a portion of their souls for their own private consumption. The sheer spiritual energy of these souls allows for marked growth of the demon’s power, strength, size, ability, and shrewdness.
Demons who fail to consistently reap a significant number of souls risk reverting to a weaker form, as the souls are crucial for their own sustenance. Those of the Humanoid Path, however, are unable to similarly feast upon souls, as their natures do not allow for it. They can and will rise in rank in accordance with their behavior, skill in reaping, and ideology, but do not feel the burning compulsion to reap that all demons experience.
There is a price for the demons’ controlled access to my supply of souls: demons are never to be resurrected. Any demon caught receiving one will immediately be demoted and will endure my utmost contempt. Those of the Humanoid Path, however, are allowed resurrections until the Fiend rank. The reasoning is simple; templars who do not consume souls for personal strength are allowed more latitude when seeking to expend souls for an occasional resurrection.
Demons are free to travel between the Underworld and the surface of Terris without hindrance. Those of humanoid form, while allowed to traverse most of the Underworld, will not have access to selected areas. Both demons and humanoids will occasionally find themselves in combat with the evil denizens of the Underworld.
Any demon (or humanoid) who struggles with some aspect of his chosen path should promptly seek out a temple leader for guidance.
