Clan Ranks and Promotions

General Clan Makeup

As you are aware, the paths of Humanoid and Demon contain six levels of rank/power. The Clan system inherently recognizes these ranks. Each power level (Demons) and rank (Humanoids) contains three separate ranks in the Clan. An example using generic ranks:

Lesser Demon:

  1. Scum
  2. Slightly better than Scum
  3. Mucus

Your first task is to reach the first rank (Scum). You’ll be told how later. The third rank (Mucus) is where you receive command of your first troops. Troops, however, are different for each Clan. The First Strike Clan, for instance, allows you to command the most troops. The Forerunners Clan has no real troops, and is a general command of those below you in rank. (Although you still have to reach rank 3 to be able to command anyone, and then rank 6 in the Demon Soldier sequence to command 3, 4, and 5.) To clarify:

Lesser Demon:1. Scum
2. Slightly better than Scum
3. Mucus

Demon Soldier:
4. High Mucus
5. Overworlder
6. Follower of Fallar

Rank 6 (Follower of Fallar) increases the number of troops at your command. Example: At rank 6 you are told you command 25 troops. At rank 3 you were given control of 5 troops. So, a Squad (generic name) equals 5 troops plus yourself, and a Platoon (generic name) equals 5 Squads plus yourself. Thus, at rank 6 you control one Platoon made up of 5 Squads. You’ll be given ample opportunity to clarify any issues, believe me.

Now, back to ranks in general. You can see that there are a total of 15 possible ranks in the army. Each rank is different from Clan to Clan, of course. In most cases, you will probably only need to get to 13 anyway, since at that Clan rank/demon power level you’re able to go form your own Clan. That said, if you wish to remain in the Clan you have been in, the way to do it is to reach rank 14, and then you will be given the details on how to get to 15 (the Clan Leader position). If you already appreciate the Clan Leader and have no desire to take over the responsibilities of the Clan, you may stay at rank 14. There’s no guarantee you’d be able to take command anyway.
The ranks and quests will not be published. Individually, you will receive them as you get to them.

If you are currently a Greater Demon, etc., and wish to join a Clan, you will not do so by skipping the first 6 ranks completely. You have two options: 1) You can go up the ranks in the proper way, but you have to be sure you’re capable of checking your ego at the door because in most cases you will be under the power of someone in a lower rank than you. (This option still allows for you to intimidate/influence them, of course, but you will have to take orders if there’s no other way around it.) 2) You have to do the quests for the two leadership positions below the Greater Demon sequence. Meaning, you do the quests for rank 3 and rank 6, and then the quest for rank 7 to officially achieve the Greater Demon sequence’s first rank.

At this time, three Clans and the lone Fellowship are officially Humanoid/Demon in nature. These are: The Dark Fellowship, the Forerunners of the Horde, the Moonlight Stalkers and The Silent Wards. The reasons: The Dark Fellowship is a very religious group in nature, and delves more deeply into souls, necromancy, and so forth than any of the Clans. In recognition of those facts, we allow them progressively greater control of soul-energy magic and other things. The Forerunners and Moonlight Stalkers are often doing missions in the Overworld, so they are ideal Clans to pepper with Humanoids. As for the Wards, they only care about their duty.

Tattoos are utilized to distinguish one Clan from another.

When you reach a rank that allows you to command troops, your title more often than not will reflect the name of your group (Squad, Band, Wing, etc.). You have the opportunity to add a catchy name to your group, and, thus, your own title. Example: Overworld Munchers Squad

Brief note on the Dark Fellowship

The Fellowship is not a typical Clan simply because it has always existed, in one form or another. It has always been a center of faith and devotion. During the Clan wars, the Fellowship simply turned to their books and experiments, ignoring what was going on around them: they alone knew that the power of Death would not long tolerate being unwielded. Even among the Clans which harbor humanoids, this Fellowship stands out as unique. It’s a perfect mixture of the two races.

The nature of those in the Fellowship is part of what makes them so different. Even the demons are sometimes ostracized by others of their race because of their strange inclinations. Not that they much care. The demons, while not affectionately inclined towards the academic life, excel at other necromantic pursuits due to their special abilities. Humanoids, while it’s harder to initially gather the soul energy necessary for their endeavors, nevertheless have the greatest ability to utilize and find out the secrets of their chosen profession.

All in all, it’s a strange order. That should cover the… basics of everything.
